Carpet Installation in Missouri: Costs, Padding and Where It Wins
Carpet follows whatever is underneath it without complaint, which makes it the most forgiving covering in a house that sits out of level — and the pad, not the carpet, decides how long it lasts.
What it costs
Installed carpet runs about $2 to $8 per square foot in Missouri, including pad and fitting. Stairs are priced per step rather than by area and should appear as their own line.
An estimate, not a quote. These are planning ranges for Missouri, not a quote. What you actually pay depends on your rooms, your subfloor and the material you choose.
The most forgiving floor over a moving substrate
Carpet is laid over a pad and stretched onto tack strip. It is not bonded, not rigid, and it does not care whether the room is perfectly level — it hides deviations that would fail a plank manufacturer’s tolerance outright. In an older Missouri house that has settled visibly, carpet is often the option that needs no leveling work at all.
What it does not tolerate is movement underfoot. A soft or springy spot is a structural question, and carpet will hide it rather than fix it, which is a reason to walk the floor before it goes down rather than after.
Spend on the pad
A denser pad under a mid-grade carpet outlasts an expensive carpet on a cheap one, and it is the cheaper decision over five years. Stairs want a firmer pad than the rooms so the nosing keeps its shape.
Where it still wins
Bedrooms, stairs and any upstairs room over living space — carpet with a good pad is the quietest surface there is, and a hard floor over thin foam is the loudest thing you can put over someone’s head.
Common questions
Is carpet bad for allergies?
It holds more than a hard floor does, but it holds it rather than circulating it, and a good vacuum closes most of the gap. If it is a serious concern, vinyl plank with a washable rug is the straightforward answer.
How long should it last?
Far longer in a bedroom than in a hall or on stairs, which take a multiple of the traffic. That is exactly why a mid-grade carpet on a good pad is sound value in bedrooms.
Can carpet go over an uneven floor?
Better than anything else, within reason. Large deviations still show as the pad compresses unevenly, and anything that moves underfoot should be fixed first.
